Tobacconomics Regional Think Tank Partners Meeting: Research Challenges and Problem Solving

Tobacconomics Regional Think Tank Partners Meeting was held on November 14-16, 2023, at the Hotel Sheraton City Center, Istanbul, Türkiye. The meeting was organized by the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) under the project “Accelerating Progress on Tobacco Taxes in Low- and Middle-Income Countries,” in order to build the capacity of economic and fiscal policy-focused think tanks to provide evidence-based support for effective tobacco taxes. UIC is a partner of the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use. The purpose of this meeting was to bring together the UIC think tank partners from the project sites in Asia, Eastern Mediterranean and Europe. Main themes of the three day’s sessions were focused on distributional impacts, youth initiation elasticities, modeling the impact of tax changes, illicit trade, macroeconomic situation and knowledge mobilization. The idea was to share research and discuss opportunities for future collaboration to integrate the partners into regional and global work. The Social Policy and Development Centre (SPDC) is funded by the UIC Institute for Health Research and Policy to conduct economic research on tobacco taxation in Pakistan. SPDC co-hosted this event with UIC. More information about the project is available at: www.tobacconomics.org.
